A Review of Taylor Swift's Lover Album: I Fancy You
Love's a Game, Wanna Play?
Can you guess how many Taylor Swift songs are quoted throughout this entire blog post? Just little snippets are sprinkled throughout to make this post a little more fun for my #Taylornation readers. To win the lyrical scavenger hunt, comment below with your guess.
(hint: not song titles, count just the lyrics quoted. "Love's a game, wanna play" is number one, good luck!)
Drop Everything Now
Its August 23, 2019..My husband comes home to me and our daughter, Kennedy with pink glitter hearts around our eyes...Other people would surely think it was weird...but I ain't gotta tell him, I think he knows...it's #TSWIFT album release day and he's accustomed to my shenanigans.
You are about to learn my favorite tracks from the new album- I chose 8 out of the 18 total songs to write about. I have also come up with a couple of #fantheories, a few #swiftie sentiments and included my favorite Taylor performance video to date.
The album included a gorgeous journal. The first few pages were covered in Taylor's photos and entries from when she learned in your life you'll do things greater than dating a boy on the football team. They were really fun and creatively inspirational to read-wow what a journey she has been on! As I told my husband, in second part of the journal I've got a blank space baby, for us to document our own adventures. A lovely reminder that our journey is nothing but our own. Our own to live, to write and to share.

I FORGOT THAT YOU EXISTED
"...your name on my lips tongue tied, free rent living in my mind. Then something happened one beautiful night...I forgot that you existed. I thought that it would kill me but it didn't. It was so nice. So peaceful and quiet."
This is the new and improved "Mean" from 2010's Speak Now album. She isn't telling us there isn't anything better than revenge or 'cause, baby, now we've got bad blood. She just forgot that they existed- how sophisticated of her. Loved this, great album opener!
This. Song. Killed. It. Chills. On. Repeat. Forever. The same vibe as the first time I heard "I Did Something Bad" and "Don't Blame Me" from Reputation. Literally, turn it up-roll the windows down, go for a drive (to Sonic Happy Hour then somewhere pretty) and sing your heart out.
"At every table I'll save you a seat...Can I go where you go? Can we always be this close?"
In 2010, Taylor's "The Story of Us" broke our hearts when she sang..."I used to know my place was the spot next to you, now I'm searching the room for an empty seat." Happy she seems happy and everyone has somewhere to sit. This song is just lovely.
"...What I was wearing. If I was rude. Could all be separated from my good ideas and power moves"
"Its okay if you're mad"
You go TSWIFT. You are a baller girl. So are literally all of my friends. Chicks working on degrees, new careers, grinding through long days in midlevel jobs, part- time jobs, full-time entrepreneurial hustles, babies, more babies and more creative ideas. Cheers to working on goals with passion and grit no matter how long the journey and certainly regardless of gender.
This powerful tune already has over 28 million streams on Spotify. It doesn't hurt that besides the killer lyrics...its a jam. #YouGoGirl
I THINK HE KNOWS
Okay, you put this song on and do your best America's Next Top Model walk around the house. Now that you've practiced, do the same strut while headed for coffee before work because you're going to kill that presentation. This is an easy jam to pop on your elliptical playlist and definitely an easy one to use for to celebrate that you've grabbed the perfect avocado in your grocery haul. Live it up ya'll. Live it up.
"Want to see whats under that attitude like, I want you bless my soul"
MISS AMERICANA & THE HEART BREAK PRINCE
Listen to it and you'll love it. Then you'll listen again and notice a few extras. Take her 2008 "You Belong with Me" and put it through the Reputation filter, add 11 years of political and personal drama and you have "Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince".
"American glory faded before me. Now I'm feeling hopeless, ripped up my prom dress. Running through rose thorns, I saw the scoreboard and ran for my life"
"American stories burning before me. I'm feeling helpless, the damsels are depressed. Boys will be boys then, where are the wise men? Darling, I'm scared."
She certainly is a poet. To me, this describes her response to #METOO, her very public lawsuit over a radio DJ being inappropriate with her or maybe even her almost forced growth stemmed from being such a public artist (high school moments as a distant memory).
This song is so cute! Just makes you go aw Taylor-so glad you're happy girl! She gives shout outs to London similarly to her "Welcome to New York" lyrics, but in a more lovey dovey way.
So I guess all the rumors are true, this song is playful and cheery. I'm thinking it would be perfect for one of those "I listen to this song everyday at 4pm" moments. I currently like to listen to Katy Perry's "Happy Birthday" every day at 4pm as a reminder to hustle for the final part of the day and knock out goals. It just puts me in a good mood! I think "London Boy" could be a perfect 4pm song or heck, maybe a Friday afternoon drive home tune?
We're so blue on this album-Red is so out. This song is beautiful. Another track on love. Have we heard Taylor say something was "on her" since "Back to December"? Who cares. She's vulnerable on this track and its gorgeous.
"Hey, It's on me, just don't go, meet me in the afterglow"
Fan Theory 1
I have a fan theory about the order of her songs on albums. I almost instinctively want to set it #2 after popping it in. Check out her list of albums and corresponding #2 songs on each:
Taylor Swift: Picture to Burn
Speak Now: Sparks Fly
1989: Blank Space
Reputation: End Game
Lover: Cruel Summer
Each of her albums has had a killer song set as the #2 track. Lover did not disappoint. My favorite song on the album is "Cruel Summer".
"Clean" from 1989 is the exact opposite of "Daylight" from Lover
"The Archer" sound has a throwback vibe like it should be on the soundtrack to Stranger Things.
"Style" is her best song dedicated to a love. Such a Jam. "Stay Beautiful" makes us say "aw cute", "Hey Stephen" is for easy listening, "Back to December" will have us rewatching Twilight (and thinking Team Jacob wasn't all wrong), "London Boy" will have you dancing, but "Style" still steals the show. You go Harry Styles (You're our Prince Eric). Honorable mention to "Call It What You Want To".
Let's talk Dixie Chicks-Wide Open Spaces was my first CD ever! I heard "Soon You'll Get Better" and immediately recognized their sound and harmony. Same sound can be found on "Lullaby" from their 2006 Taking the Long Way Around album. Did I then rip into my version of Natalie's "I'm Not Ready to Make Nice" solo? Yes.
1998 "There's Your Trouble" + 2012 "I Knew You Were Trouble" = 2019 Dreamy Collab
So whats the real difference between Reputation and Lover? Well you're in a basic Beyonce' I am...vs. Sasha Fierce debacle. Do you want a relatable piece of art to sing along to and imagine yourself as the heroine? Or do you want the song to be a piece of art? A narrative designed as a a thought provoking illusion to represent an exaggerated truth? Reputation is your alter ego, Lover is the journey of being known-for real.
The below is what I consider to be her best song and her best performance.
"And you call me up again just to break me like a promise. So casually cruel in the name of being honest" -"All to Well" by Taylor Swift
